About us and our flowers

“THERE IS NO GARDENING WITHOUT HUMILITY.
NATURE IS CONSTANTLY SENDING EVEN ITS OLDEST SCHOLARS
TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CLASS FOR SOME EGREGIOUS BLUNDER.”

~ ALFRED AUSTIN

Hi, my name is Nancy Howes-Olmstead.  My hubby, Kevin, and I have a small scale flower growing operation in Norfolk County.  We grow seasonal flowers and make quality floral arrangements with these fresh flowers.  We also sell bunches of flower stalks for DIY floral arrangers. Our flowers and floral arrangements are available from June to October based on what’s blooming in the garden field.

I’m a local gal born and raised in Simcoe.  My family roots are deep in Norfolk County going back to the original settlers of the Long Point area.  My Dad used to say when I was growing up that we were distantly related to half the people of Norfolk County.  I moved to Calgary in 1981 and had a career that I really enjoyed in the oil and gas sector as a landman.  During the economic slump of 2008 I created a new business and called it garden gal.  The focus was garden restoration, design, plant selection and garden maintenance.  It was a lot of fun working in some of the most amazing  gardens in Calgary.

Kevin, is retired from the rat race and is now able to assist me in so many ways with this new venture. He holds a Soil Science Diploma from Olds College and knows all kinds of interesting stuff. One thing we always agree on is that it all starts with the soil. I absolutely could not do this without him backing me up and doing the heavy lifting.

Our operation is nestled in the Township of Charlotteville, on the north shore of Lake Erie in Norfolk County.  We are so blessed to have this property where we  enjoy the fabulous view of the Inner Bay of Long Point as well as all the birds that come to visit us.

My parents bought this property in 1982 the same year Kevin and I were married.  Our two grown up daughters have been coming here since they were very young and we have had so many wonderful family gatherings here. Last year our first grandchild came for his first visit and my Dad was delighted to entertain and be entertained by him. We miss my mother tremendously because she was such a knowledge bank of all things going on in Norfolk, but she’d be so happy to see what we are doing. My parents sold this property to us in 2000 and we were able to also purchase a few other surrounding parcels of land. Kevin has worked hard at cleaning up where our cutting garden is located.  It was a tangle of brush and grape vine but is now the perfect setting for us to sustainably grow seasonal cut flowers.

We know this new venture is going to be lots of hard work, but we’re ready for it and we look forward to making some new friends along the way.

Welcome
